چکیده

Electrodialysis is an electrochemical membrane separation technique for ionic solutions that has been used in industry for several decades. It can be used in the separation and concentration of salts, acids, and bases from aqueous solutions, the separation of monovalent ions from multivalent ions, and the separation of ionic compounds from uncharged molecules. It can be used for either electrolyte reduction in feed streams or recovery of ions from dilute streams. Industrial applications encompass several industries and include the production of potable water from brackish water, removal of metals from wastewater, demineralization of whey, deacidification of fruit juices, and the removal of organic acids from fermentation broth. 5] Additional examples of the applications of electrodialysis are given in Table 1.

Reverse Electrodialysis for Salinity Gradient Power Generation: Challenges and Future Perspectives

Salinity gradient energy, which is also known as Blue energy, is a renewable energy form that can be extracted from the mixing of two solutions with different salinities. About 80% of the current global electricity demand could potentially be covered by this energy source. Among several energy extraction technologie...

Removal of Ash: Potential Use of Electrodialysis

Within an electrodialysis unit, the solutions are separated by alternately arranged anion exchange membranes (permeable only for anions) and cation exchange membranes (permeable only for cations). The membranes are arranged parallel to one another to form an electrodialysis stack. When a potential is applied across the selectively permeable membrane stack, anions selectively move through the an...

How Operational Parameters and Membrane Characteristics Affect the Performance of Electrodialysis Reversal Desalination Systems: The State of the Art*

Operating parameters and membrane characteristics strongly affect the performance of electrodialysis reversal systems. The most impactful factors are applied voltage, flow rate, temperature, initial feed composition, and ion exchange membrane characteristics; the pH of the feed also has an effect, although to a lesser extent. To determine more precisely how all of these factors impact performan...

Electric Power Generation with Reverse Electrodialysis

The computer simulation program of a practical scale reverse electrodialysis process has been developed based on the program for saline water electrodialysis. The program is applied to compute the performance of an industrial-scale reverse electrodialysis stack (effective membrane area S = 1 m × 1 m = 1 m2, cell pair number N = 300 pairs). The stack operatingconditions are optimized. Seaw...

A mathematical model of multicomponent mass transfer in electrodialysis

A mathematical model has been developed which describes the mass transfer across monovalent-ionpermselective membranes as used in an electrodialysis cell. The mass transfer model is based on the StefanMaxwell transport equations. The latters are derived in the membrane phase with two unstirred layers on each side. Donnan equilibrium is used to describe the concentration and the potential discon...
